FEBRUARY PROGRAMS

escape the upside down@ MERRICK LIBRARY
Friday, February 2nd 6:30-8:30pm
Team up with friends and use your wits to save Eleven from the Upside Down and find your way out before the time runs out? Each team will have 20 minutes to solve a series of puzzles that leads them to the room's exit! A variety of board & video games will be available to play while you wait for your team's turn. Snacks will be served. This program is part of LIT, an after-hours space just for teens hosted on a rotating basis by the Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick & North Merrick libraries on the first Friday of each month. Open to grades 6th-12th. Please register in advance online at www.merricklibrary.org.

CHESS TOURNAMENT
Sunday, February 11th 1:30-5pm
Join Chess Master Joel Salman as he conducts this lively tournament for chess enthusiasts in grades 2 through 12. Chess sets, boards and clocks will be provided. Check-in between 1:30-1:45pm, round one begins at 1:50pm. Please arrive promptly. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Prizes will be given to those players who complete the tournament. All participants must register in advance online or at the Reference Desk.

Cookie Dough Cones

Why wait on line in NYC to try edible cookie dough when you can learn how to make it from scratch? Join Ms. Kathy to make this delicious treat! Open to grades 5 +

Lip Sync and Dance Battle @ N. Merrick Library
Friday, February 16th 7-8:30 pm 
In honor of author Jen Calonita’s new book, Turn It Up, the library will host a Lip Sync Battle! Teens will break into teams and compete to be the best lip sync & dance champions. Prizes will be awarded for most team spirit and best dance routine. Additionally, Jen will discuss her new book, and copies will be raffled off. Dog Toys & Adoption Boards
Tuesday, February 20th 7pm
Join Ms. Theresa to create adoption boards to promote adoption for shelter animals. We will also make toys for dogs to keep them busy while they wait for a fur-ever home. Community service will be awarded. Open to grades 5 +

Memory wire Jewelry Class
Wednesday, February 21st 7-8:30pm
Join Ms. Gina to create a beautiful and unique memory wire bracelet. All
materials provided. Open to grades 5 and up.

Baby Blankets for Charity
Wednesday, February 28th
Join Ms. Kathy to make a homemade snuggly soft blanket for a baby in need. No sewing involved. Community service will be awarded. Open to grades 5 +

 LIT invites current 6th-12th graders to an after-hours space just for teens. Hosted monthly on a rotating basis by the N. Bellmore, Bellmore, Merrick, and N. Merrick Libraries. This month we invite you to escape the cold winter weather, and come putter around the Bellmore Library! Don’t miss this fun opportunity to tee off after hours in the library! COMMUNITY SERVICE
Cookies for Charity
Tuesday, January 9th, 7-8pm
Join us in baking for a good cause! We will learn to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch, and Mrs. Kathy will bake them and bring them to a local shelter.
Pillows for Charity
Wednesday, January 24th, 7-8pm
Make a fuzzy, fleece pillow from scratch! No sewing involved! Pillows will be donated to Ronald McDonald house in New Hyde Park. Community service certificate will be given to all participants!
Bowties for Shelter Animals
Wednesday, January 31st, 7pm
Join Ms. Theresa to create adorable bowties for shelter animals to improve their chances for adoption. We will also make a bowtie for you to bring home to your own furry family member.

Fleece Hats for Babies
Monday, December 4th 7-8pm
Winter is coming! Join Mrs. Kathy to knot, cut and create a warm fleece hat for a child in need. The hats will be donated to Ronald McDonald House.

Adopt Me Portraits
Monday, December 11th 7-8:30pm
We will paint or draw portraits of adoptable shelter animals, assisted by instructor Theresa Maritato. Each picture will be donated to a local animal shelter, which will help to promote each animal’s adoption.

Reason2Smile Bracelets
Wednesday, December 13th 7-8:30pm
Using colorful recycled paper beads made by Kenyan women, Donna Rosenblum, Executive Director of Reason2Smile, will instruct you on how to make a beaded bracelet. Use of these recycled beads supports the Jambo Jipya school and Children's home in Mtwapa, Kenya while keeping our planet green. Donna will also share what life is like in Mtwapa and how Reason2Smile is making a difference in lives of children.

Adopt Me Bandanas
Friday, December 29th 3:30-5pm
Teens will paint special messages onto bandanas using fabric paint, markers and stencils, assisted by instructor Theresa Maritato. Shelter pets can wear these to special events and they will help to promote each animals’ adoption.

Humane Society
Monday, November 13th 7pm
Do you care about animals? Learn how they can benefit from the actions you take and the choices you make everyday. A representative from the HEART (Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers) will join us to discuss ways you can get involved in your own community.

Dog Treats for Charity
Tuesday, November 14th 7-8pm
Unfortunately we can't bring home every dog that lives in the shelter, but we can brighten their day with tasty treats!  Join Mrs. Kathy to make dog biscuits to be donated to a local animal shelter. (Peanut butter products used)

Caturday Crafts

Let's not forget about those adorable shelter cats! We will create crafts which will promote their adoption. We will also make toys for cats to keep them busy while they wait for a fur-ever home.

LIT Movie Event: Wonder
LIT invites current 5th-12th graders to an after-hours space just for teens. Hosted monthly on a rotating basis by the N. Bellmore, Bellmore, Merrick, and N. Merrick Libraries. This month we invite you to the Bellmore Playhouse on Wednesday, November 29th at 4pm for a viewing of Wonder, a film based on the NY Times bestseller by R.J. Palacio. Enjoy free popcorn and soda. This is a drop off event only. Space is limited. Registration begins November 1st.

Pumpkin Loaf to Donate
Wednesday, October 11th 7pm
Join Mrs. Kathy to make delicious pumpkin loaf from scratch to donate to those in need. We will measure and mix the ingredients to make the loaves. Mrs. Kathy will bake the loaves and bring them to a local shelter.

Kindness Rocks
Monday, October 16th 3:30pm
Paint a kindness rock at the library! Kindness rocks are stones that have been painted with an uplifting image or message. They are frequently placed in inconspicuous public places for passers-by to find and be inspired by. You don't have to be a good artist to paint a kindness rock. You just need a good heart!  

Thank You Veterans!
Monday, October 23rd 3:30pm
Join us to honor and thank our Veterans for their service. We will collaborate with Operation Gratitude, and their mission to express appreciation for the sacrifices of our Military. Our cards and letters will be included in the care packages sent to Military Veterans all across the country.
