December LIT Event: Doctor Who

Libraries Ignite Teens invites current 6th-12th
graders to kick off the weekend in a fun way with an after-hours space just for teens. In anticipation of the new season of Doctor Who, Bellmore Library will host a Doctor Who Pizza and Cosplay Party! Join us to create your own light up TARDIS ornament, eat pizza and refreshments, and we will have a DW giveaway. To further whet your Whovian appetite, we will be screening last year's Christmas Special: “The Husband’s of River Song.” Please register in advance at ww.bellmorelibrary.org.

Pillows FOR CHARITY
Monday, December 12th 7-8pm
The winter weather is coming. Join Mrs. Kathy to make a fuzzy, fleece pillow to donate to those in need. No sewing involved! Community service certificate will be given to all participants! 

BATH TOWELS FOR CHARITY
Wednesday, December 21st 7-8pm
The Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen is the only place in Nassau County that allows people to shower, no questions asked. They are in need of towels. Join Mrs. Kathy to decorate towels with paint and stencils to be donated. Community service certificate given to each participant.

Dog Treats for Charity
Thursday, December 29th 7-8pm
Join Mrs. Kathy to make dog treats from scratch using cookie cutters to make pet-friendly shapes. We will donate them to a local animal shelter.
(Peanut butter products are used at this event.)

Libraries Ignite Teens invites current 6th-12th graders to kick off the weekend in a fun way with an after-hours space just for teens. Hosted monthly on a rotating basis by the N. Bellmore, Bellmore, Merrick, and N. Merrick Libraries, LIT will feature different activities, events, as well as spaces to hang out, munch on snacks, and get together with friends. This month we invite you to the Bellmore Playhouse at 525 Bedford Avenue in Bellmore on Friday, November 18th at 4pm for a viewing of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Have fun while earning community service making blankets for those in need! No sewing involved. Join Mrs. Kathy to measure, cut, and knot fleece material to make cuddly blankets. All participants will receive a community service certificate.

Join us to make beautiful and unique bookmarks for our homebound patrons. It will brighten their day to receive a fancy new bookmark that is crafted from the heart.

Pumpkin Loaf to Donate

Join Mrs. Kathy to make delicious pumpkin loaf from scratch to donate to those in need. We will measure and mix the ingredients to make the loaves. Mrs. Kathy will bake the loaves and bring them to a local shelter. Community service certificates will be given to all participants.

Welcome Back Students!

We are here to help with any school projects or research papers. Visit us at our home page www.northbellmorelibrary.org for access to many databases with valuable information and support for your schoolwork, available in the library and from home. Students who have not yet read the required summer reading book, can still come in to find the books in the YA section. If the book is not on the shelf, a Librarian can request that a copy be brought into the library.

SAT Prep Class
This is a six-week math and verbal course to help high school sophomores and juniors prepare for the new Scholastic Aptitude Test. Classes will be held: Thursdays, September 15th, 29th October 6th, 13th & 20th and November 5th from 6:45-8:45pm. An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is required at registration. Students must purchase McGraw-Hill’s SAT I Book, 2017 Edition for class. Please sign up in advance at the Adult Reference Desk. Space is limited!

Over a million children experience homelessness every year. Many kids’ birthdays fall while they are in a shelter, making it hard to celebrate. In collaboration with DoSomething.org we will make and mail birthday cards to help ensure everyone gets to celebrate on their special day! All materials provided and community service certificates will be awarded.

Cookies for Charity
Tuesday, September 20th 7-8pm
Join us in baking for a good cause. We will learn to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch, and Mrs. Kathy will bake them and bring them to a local shelter. Community service certificates will be awarded.

Dog Toys for Charity

Dogs that don't get toys to chew on can be less playful, which makes them less likely to be adopted. Everyone loves a playful pooch! We will make DIY doggie toys for shelters and encourage potential adopters to give those pups a new home. Please bring an old t-shirt with you! Grades 5+.

Money Jars for Charity
Monday, May 23rd 7-8pm
Join Mrs. Kathy to create a loose change jar using tissue paper, paint, markers, buttons, ribbons, and more!. We will wrap them up and donate them to children at Ronald McDonald House. A community service certificate will be given to all participants! Grades 5+

It’s that time of year again, and the Young Adult books need to be cleaned.

INTO THE WOODS
Wednesday, April 27th 12:30-3pm
Do you need community service hours? Join us for a fun afternoon of activities inspired by some of our favorite storybook characters. The YA Department will be hosting children of all ages as they travel through the storybook woods in search of adventure, and we need teen volunteers to help! You can even dress in costume if you like! Please register in advance.

Join Chess Master Joel Salman as he conducts this lively tournament for chess enthusiasts in grades 2 through 12. Chess sets, boards and clocks will be provided for all players. Check-in between 1:30-1:45pm, round one begins at 1:50pm. Please arrive promptly. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. All participants must register in advance online or at the Reference Desk.

SAT Prep Course
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the NEW SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. This 6 week course will be held from 6:45-8:45pm on the following Thursday evenings: March 10th, 17th, 31st and April 7th, 14th & 21st. Introduction to 3-D Printing
Saturday, March 19th 1:30-4:30pm
Attention inventors and makers! Learn all about amazing 3-D printing technology at our first ever Children’s/Young Adult Maker-Faire for grades 2 and up. 3-D printers can manufacture nearly anything from a virtual computer model by “printing” material, layer by layer, resulting in a concrete, physical object. Have fun designing models for a project, create game pieces for board games and much more! Registration begins March 3rd.

Distressed denim workshop

Join fashion designer, Kathryn Hunt to create a one-of-a-kind denim masterpiece! Bring in a pair of jeans or denim jacket and learn basic techniques to add distressed details to make your denim marvelous! Tools are provided as well as denim sample fabrics for practice. .

TEEN MOVIE: Star Wars: Episode IV-A New Hope

You may not have been alive when this film hit the theaters, so here is your chance to see it on a big screen! Chinese Chicken Dumplings
Thursday, February 18th 7pm
Ms. Kathy returns to make Chinese chicken dumplings to celebrate the Chinese New Year. After a demonstration, participants will prepare all the ingredients needed to make scrumptious dumplings, wrap them individually, put them in a tin, and take them home to cook. Please be advised that this class may contain food allergens.

Join us to make birthday cards for the elderly. Our cards will help bring joy to some of our isolated seniors in the area. Often, this card is the only recognition a senior receives on his or her birthday. Community service will be awarded. Grades 5 and up.

CHESS TOURNAMENT 
Sunday, March 6th 1:30-5pm
Join Chess Master Joel Salman as he conducts this lively tournament for chess enthusiasts in grades 2 through 12. Chess sets, boards and clocks will be provided for all players. Check-in between 1:30-1:45pm, round one begins at 1:50pm. Please arrive promptly. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Prizes will be given to those players who complete the tournament. All participants must register in advance online or at the Reference Desk

SAT Prep Course
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. This 6 week course will be held from 6:45-8:45pm on the following Thursday evenings: March 10th, 17th, 31st and April 7th, 14th & 21st. An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is required at registration. Students must purchase McGraw-Hill’s SAT I Book, 2016 for class. We have limited copies for sale at the Reference Desk for $5. Registration begins February 1st at the Reference Desk.

Bookend Decorating
Monday, January 11th, 3:30-4:30pm
Use your crafty skills to beautify the Young Adult Department. We will decorate our boring old bookends using paint, old magazines and glitter! Sign-up in advance online or at the Reference Desk. Community service will be awarded.

BABY BLANKETS FOR CHARITY
Thursday, January 14th 7-8pm
Join us to help a baby in need! We will measure, cut, and knot baby and toddler patterns to make a blanket to donate to a baby in need. No sewing involved. Sign-up in advance online or at the Reference Desk. Community service will be awarded.

Mrs. Kathy will teach us how to season chicken and prepare a delicious and nutritious taco. There will be a choice of soft and hard tacos, and lots of toppings! Please let us know in advance if you have any food allergies.
