College Application Essay Workshop (virtual)

Thursday, October 1st and 8th at 6:45-8:15

This virtual workshop will review the Common App’s prompts, explain what colleges are really asking and address the new Covid-19 question. Open to high school seniors and/or parents. Interested juniors are also welcome to attend. 


Fall Signs for Seniors (in-person/outdoor)

Monday, October 5th at 3:30pm

Teens/tweens are invited to craft Fall themed banners for local nursing home residents and homebound seniors (weather permitting). Community Service credit will be awarded. 

Reason 2 Smile Beaded Bracelets (virtual)

Tuesday, October 13th at 7:00pm

Participants will make bead bracelets with a representative of Reason 2 Smile and learn how these bracelets support the Jambo Jipya School in Kenya. Pick up materials beginning 10/5. Community Service credit will be awarded to those who attend the Zoom meeting.


Learn to Code (virtual; grades 4-8)

Thursdays, October 15th, 22nd, & 29th at 4:00pm

In these classes for beginners, students will learn visual block coding on Tynker, then progress to text-based coding using Javascript and Python. Open to grades 4-8. Registration begins on Wednesday October 7th at 10:00am. 

Pet Emergency Kits (virtual)

Tuesday, October 20th at 3:30pm

Make a tote for a pet emergency kit and learn what your pet or a shelter pet may need in case of an emergency or natural disaster. Those who return their tote to the library or donate it to a shelter will receive community service credit. Materials can be picked up beginning 10/13. 


Halloween Graveyard Cake (virtual)

Wednesday, October 21st at 7:00pm

Get in the Halloween spirit making a spooky graveyard cake! Decorating kits can be picked up beginning 10/19. 


Trick or Treat Halloween Trivia (virtual)

Thursday, October 29th at 7:00pm

Compete against other local teens in this trivia challenge open to teens from North Bellmore, Bellmore, Merrick and North Merrick. Costumes are encouraged and there will be a contest for best costume. Winners will receive a prize! Registration begins 10/15. 


Halloween Photo Opp! (outdoor event) Drop by the North Bellmore Public Library on Halloween to take a photo with our Peanuts Halloween Background & take home a special Halloween treat!

Decorative Pencils and Case (Take & Make)
Thursday September 3rd
School is in session and it is time to update your school supplies! This DIY bundle contains items to make  decorative pencils and a pencil case. Registration begins on Thursday 9/3 at 10am. Kits will be available for pickup beginning Tuesday 9/8. Open to grades 6 and up.

Kahoot! Trivia Night (Virtual)
Thursday September 3rd at 7pm
You are invited to compete against other local tweens/teens in this virtual trivia challenge that will test your knowledge of movies, music, sports, shows, books, and more! A Zoom invitation will be sent to registrants. Open to grades 6 and up.

Tie Dye (In-person)
Tuesday September 22 at 3:45-4:45pm
We’ve missed you and can’t wait to welcome you for an afternoon of tie dying fun at the library! This event will be held outside (weather permitting). Participants will be socially distanced and required to wear gloves and masks throughout the program. Open to grades 6 and up.

Scavenger Hunt (Virtual)
Friday September 25th at 7:00pm
Join us for a virtual scavenger hunt for items you can find in and around your house! Participants will be challenged to find items prior to the event and will also compete head-to-head during the live event. A prize will be awarded to the person with the most items! Open to grades 6 and up.

Imagine Your Story – Summer Reading 2020
The theme of this year’s summer reading program is “Imagine Your Story” and NBPL has imagined an exciting, new virtual reading program on Reader Zone. Like our traditional summer reading program, you will report your reading to enter weekly raffles. However, this year you will be able to easily track and report your reading in Reader Zone --no trip to the library necessary!  The first 25 teens to sign up for summer reading will receive a bundle containing Imagine Your Story swag, instructions on setting up your Reader Zone account, and a book by Jen Calonita to help you to get your summer reading started!

A Summer of Fun!
NBPL wants to bring you a summer full of fun! We will be offering weekly “Bundles of Fun” for teens in grades 6 & up throughout the summer. Each bundle will contain a fun and engaging activity to keep you busy. Bundles will be distributed to the first 20+ patrons to register each week as supplies allow. 
**A new bundle signup will be offered every Monday, beginning June 15th.**

Virtual “Teen Night In” Programs
On Thursdays throughout the summer, we will be offering weekly virtual teen events on Zoom in collaboration with the Merrick, North Merrick and Bellmore libraries. Registration for these events will be on our web site,  events calendar, and Facebook page. Open to grades 6 & up.

LIT: TEEN PAINT NIGHT

North Bellmore, North Merrick, Bellmore, and Merrick Libraries, invite you to a night of fun as you paint your own canvas creation! This is a drop off event at North Bellmore Public Library for teens in grades 6-12. Space is limited. Register in advance at the reference desk or at www.northbellmorelibrary.org

This six-week class covers the math and verbal sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Students must register in advance at the Adult Reference Desk. An $85 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is due at registration. Students must also buy McGraw-Hill SAT 2020 1st Edition. A limited number of copies will be available for purchase at the reference desk for $15. Registration begins February 3rd.
Space is limited.

A volunteer from The Little Angel Fund will help us to assemble Welcome Kits that will be distributed to families of premature and ill infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We will also design cards. Community service credit will be awarded. 
DOOR DECORATIONS FOR SENIORS
Monday January 13th 3:30-4:30pm
Make someone’s day by crafting seasonal door hangers that will be distributed to a local senior care facility. Community service credit will be awarded.
“ADOPT ME” PORTRAITS
Thursday January 23rd 4-5:30pm
Join Miss Theresa to paint portraits of adorable shelter animals that will encourage each animals’ adoption and help them find their forever homes. Community service credit will be awarded.

The Book Fairies collects and distributes reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. Join us to design bookmarks that can be given out with books and other materials. Community service credit will be awarded.
