LIT Extreme Gingerbread challenge

Friday, December 7th 6:30pm

LIT invites current 6^th-12^th graders to an after-hours space just for teens. Hosted monthly on a rotating basis by the N. Bellmore, Bellmore, Merrick, and N. Merrick Libraries. This month we invite you to be creative and crazy and come build an EXTREME Gingerbread House! We provide the supplies, you provide the design! We will work in teams, and the winning team will receive a grand prize! To make sure we have enough goodies, please register in advance at www.nmerricklibrary.org or at the Adult Reference Desk.

Looking for something fun to do on a Friday night? Celicia Cargill of Authentic HeARTwork will show you how to paint your own winter wonderland at the library! Open to grades 6-12.

POT HOLDERS FOR MEALS ON WHEELS

Saturday, December 29^th Drop in from 10am-1pm

Drop in to our temporary location on Saturday, December 29th anytime between 10am and 1pm to decorate potholders and lunch bags for Meals on Wheels recipients. It will be a lovely extra and hopefully spread a little sunshine. All participants will receive a community service. Open to grades 5+ No registration required.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald 

Libraries Ignite Teens invites current 6^th-12^th graders to an after-hours space just for teens. Hosted monthly on a rotating basis by the N. Bellmore, Bellmore, Merrick, and N. Merrick Libraries, LIT will feature different activities, events, as well as spaces to hang out, munch on snacks, and get together with friends. This month we invite you to the Bellmore Playhouse on Friday, November 16^th at 4pm for a viewing of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. This is the second installment of the "Fantastic Beasts" series set in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World featuring the adventures of magizoologist Newt Scamander. Enjoy free popcorn and soda. This is a drop off event only. Space is limited. Registration is required.

BIRTHDAY BOXES

Tuesday, November 27^th 3:30pm

Our Library hosted a Birthday Party Supply drive in collaboration with Birthday Wishes, a local charity with a mission to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. Now we need help to assemble and decorate the boxes for delivery. Join us to help make a child’s birthday special. You can also bring any donations with you to the event. The boxes will include: new, unopened birthday supplies such as themed plastic tablecloths, birthday banners, party hats, blowers, balloons, disposable cake pans, juice boxes, birthday plates and napkins and unwrapped toys. Community service will be awarded.

BOOKMARKS FOR THE ELDERLY

Saturday, December 1^st 10am-1pm

Drop in at our temporary location anytime between 10am and 1pm on Saturday,

December 1^st to design and decorate beautiful and unique bookmarks for our homebound patrons. It will brighten their day to receive a fancy new bookmark that is crafted from the heart. Community service will be awarded Grades 5 and up.

OCTOBER PROGRAMS

On Saturday, October 13^th libraries across Long Island are hosting a variety of different initiatives that will allow us to help those in need. Please join us for a day of community service, family and fun as we host the following:

 Thank You Veterans!

Drop in anytime to decorate cards and write letters to honor and thank our Veterans for their service. We will collaborate with Operation Gratitude, and their mission to express appreciation for the sacrifices of our Military. Our cards and letters will be included in the care packages sent to Military Veterans all across the country.

BIRTHDAY BOXES

Welcome Back Students!

We are here to help with any school projects or research papers. Visit us at our home page www.northbellmorelibrary.org for access to many databases with valuable information and support for your schoolwork, available in the library and from home. Students who have not yet read the required summer reading book, can still come in to find the books in the YA section. If the book is not on the shelf, a Librarian can request that a copy be brought into the library.

BANNED BOOK WEEK

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Banned Books Week 2018 will be held September 23 – 29. The 2018 theme, “Banning Books Silences Stories,” is a reminder that everyone needs to speak out against the tide of censorship.  To honor Banned Books Week we will have a contest! Stop by our temporary location to guess which banned book has been shredded and put on display. Every correct guess will be entered to win a raffle. The winner will be announced October 1st. DID YOU KNOW?????????

The NBL has over 1,000 video games, and we brought all of them to our temporary location. We have games for Nintendo Switch, DS, Wii, Wii U, Microsoft Xbox 360and Xbox One, and Sony PS3 and PS4. Video games are limited to  two per library card, and  can be checked out for  7 days. If you have any  suggestions for purchase  please email Mrs Tymecki at   jtymecki@northbellmorelibrary.org.

SUMMER PROGRAMS @ NBL

Teen Summer Reading Club 2018

Our old building may be closed for renovation, but we’re still rocking! Visit us at our temporary location to sign up for the Teen SRC! All North Bellmore students entering grades 6 through 12 in September can join NBL’s summer reading club. As a member you will read books, write reviews of the books you have read, and submit them for a chance to win the weekly raffle. When you sign up for the SRC you will get a bag of goodies and a chance to guess how many candies are in the jar at the Reference Desk. The closest guess wins the whole jar!

Due to our building renovation, all of our programs will take place at Grace Lutheran Church located at 1294 Bellmore Avenue in North Bellmore. We are very grateful to the staff and parishioners at Grace Lutheran who have kindly offered their space with the community.

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP

Join registered nurses Joanne Tanck and Georgette Basso for a two-hour basic first aid course and an introduction to babysitting skills. Participants are asked to bring a doll or stuffed animal for demonstration. Certificates will be awarded to all participants.

EMERGENCY KITS FOR SHELTER ANIMALS

Monday, April 16^th 3:30-5pm

Join Ms. Theresa to create emergency kits for shelter animals. The kit will be filled with the most needed items for cats and dogs in the event of an emergency. We will donate these kits to the local animal shelter. All participants will receive 1.5 hours of community service.

BIRTHDAY CARDS FOR ELDERLY

Tuesday, April 17^th 3:30-4:30pm

Join us to make birthday cards for the elderly. Our cards will help bring joy to some of our isolated seniors in the area. Often, this card is the only recognition a senior receives on his or her birthday. Community service will be awarded.

PATIENT PLAY BOOKS

There are more than 6 million children hospitalized each year. Being in the hospital can be really scary, especially for kids. Join us to create activity books to brighten their stay!

SPRING CLEANING

Saturday, April 28^th 2-4pm

It’s that time of year again, and the Young Adult books need to be cleaned. If you need volunteer hours or you just want to pitch in, come help us out for 1 to 3 hours. Grab a friend and come ready to clean!

Registration is required for all the above programs. Register at the Adult Reference Desk or www.northbellmorelibrary.org. Preference will be given to NBL patrons. All community service programs are open to grades 5-12. Community service hours and/or certificates will be awarded  for each program.

Join Ms. Nancy to create special scrapbooks, known as lifebooks, that adoptive and foster children will use for sharing their memories and important moments. All materials will be provided. Community service will be awarded. Open to grades 5+.

Containers for Kids

Monday, March 19^th 3:30pm

 Join Ms. Nancy to design and decorate storage containers for young people in need. These personalized containers will be donated to Hope for Youth, a Long-Island based non-profit organization that assists young people in foster care or experiencing family crisis. All materials provided. Community service will be awarded. Open to grades 5+.

Shark Tank

Thursday, March 22^nd, 6:30-8:30pm

Break into groups and come up with an original and creative business idea. You will learn how to make a business plan while sharpening your presentation and communication skills. Prizes will be given to winners and snacks will be provided! 2 hours of community service will be awarded.
