LEGO CLUB

Chess Tournament

JUNIOR DIVISION: Grades 3-6

Join Chess Master Joel Salman as he conducts this lively tournament for chess enthusiasts. Five rounds of timed matches are planned for the Junior Division (grades 3-6) and four for the Senior Division (grade 7-adult). Trophies will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners in each division, and prizes will be given to those players who complete the tournament.

CUPCAKE DECORATING
Tuesday, December 18th 7-8pm
Join us to decorate holiday cupcakes using frosting, cookies, and candies. All food coloring for frosting is Organic with no artificial colors or flavors. Use your creativity to decorate a delicious treat for yourself or a friend!  Sign-up in advance!

Join us in baking for a good cause. We will learn to make homemade chocolate chip cookies from scratch, and Miss Kathy will bake half of them and bring them to the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen in Hempstead. We will bring the other half home to enjoy with family & friends.

WINTER WHITE COTILLION (RESCHEDULED)

Join us to celebrate the release of the 2nd book in Jen Calonita’s Belle’s series! Step into Izzie and Mira's heels and experience what it would be like to train for cotillion first-hand. We are teaming up with the Merrick, N. Merrick and Bellmore Libraries to host this incredibly fun Winter White event that is much more than just a regular book signing! Those who sign up can learn the waltz with a dance instructor and proper table manners with an etiquette expert. Show your love for Team Izzie or Team Mira by dressing as your favorite character from Belles. This is a six-week math and verbal course to help high school sophomores and juniors prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Classes will be held Thursdays: September 13th, 20th and 27th and October 4th, 11th and 18th from 6:45-8:45 p.m. An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is required at registration. Students must purchase McGraw-Hill’s SAT I Book, 2012 Edition for class. We have limited copies for sale at the Reference Desk for $5. Please sign up in advance at the Adult Reference Desk. This summer our favorite teen author, Jen Calonita, invites you and your friends to join our super fun Beach Bag Book Club. At each event, we will discuss the books with not only Ms. Calonita, but with the author of the book itself. Our July books are She’s So Not Worth It by Kieran Scott and The Darlings In Love by Melissa Kantor and in August we’ll read Belles by Jen Calonita and The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jen E. Smith. Everyone that signs up for the BBB Club gets a beach bag to tote all of your favorite books around in this summer. Our club will meet at the Merrick Library at 2279 Merrick Avenue in Merrick.

VIDEO GAME DESIGN

In this two session hands-on class, you will get an introduction to the basics of video game creation.  Learn how to design a video game and write a program.  You will construct rooms and doorways, add a player, objects, textures, colors, lighting and more.  We will compile the finished program and learn how to make changes and correct errors. Teen Summer Reading Program

“OWN THE NIGHT” - July 10th – August 21st
Join us to kick-off the summer right at our annual summer pizza party on July 10th at 5:30pm! Sign up for the teen summer reading club while eating pizza, playing fun games, making crafts, and entering raffles to win more prizes! All students entering 6th through 12th grade in September can join NBL’s summer reading club starting July 10th. As a member you will read books, write reviews of the books you have read, and submit them for a chance to win the weekly raffle. When you sign up for the summer reading club you will get a chance to guess how many candies are in the jar at the library. The closest guess wins the whole jar!

We have teamed up again with the Merrick, North Merrick and Bellmore Library to bring back the Beach Bag Book Club. At each event, hosted by young adult author Jen Calonita (Secrets of My Hollywood Life series and the new series Belles), teens will get to discuss a book pre-selected for them with not only Ms. Calonita, but with the author of the book itself. We are starting our club off with a bang, hosting Susane Colasanti author of Keep Holding On, and Elizabeth Eulberg author of Take a Bow on Wednesday, June 20th. Everyone that signs up gets a beach bag to tote all of your favorite books around in this summer. Sign up in advance online or at the Adult Reference Desk-space is limited!

We welcome Young Adult author, Matt Blackstone, who will talk about his book, an utterly original, hilarious, realistic tale of overcoming high school stress and anxiety. There will be a reading from his book, A Scary Scene in a Scary Movie, a Q&A period, a meet and greet, a book raffle and signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase on the night of the event.

SAT Prep Course
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. This 6 week course will be held from 6:45-8:45pm on the following Thursday evenings: March 1st, 8th, 15th, 29th and April 12th & 19th. The fee is $80.00 per student. The Young Adult Department is hosting a Harry Potter Day for children in grades 2-5 on Friday, February 24th from 3-6pm. We need volunteers to run the various stations and help with arts & crafts. Babysitting Workshop
Monday, February 27th 6-8pm
Teenagers are invited to learn the basics of caring for infants and small children along with first aid techniques. Registered nurses Joanne Tanck and Georgette Basso will present a two-hour basic first aid course and an introduction to babysitting skills. Participants are asked to bring a doll or stuffed animal for demonstration. Certificates will be awarded.

Come to the Library on Friday the 13th for a viewing of Super 8! In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident.
