Illusion Necklace with Ofra

Wednesday, December 17th 7pm
Just in time for holiday gift giving, or a little gift for yourself. Come and enjoy the fun of learning how to make this simple and elegant necklace. The beads on the necklace look as if they are floating. Crimp beads are used as "stoppers" so the floating beads stay in place. This program is open to adults and young adults. $10 materials fee collected at registration.

Teen Movie: The Maze Runner

Tuesday, December 30th 6pm
Based on the bestselling novel by James Dashner, this adventure thriller follows a young boy named Thomas who finds himself trapped within a giant, deadly maze with a group of other kids. While he has no memories of his life prior to being in the maze, he is plagued by nightmares about a shadowy organization known only as W.C.K.D., and hopes that these fragments of dreams will help him discover the secrets of his past and a way to escape. You decide which is better-the book or the movie. Rated PG-13

Patient Playbooks
Monday, December 8th 3:30-4:30pm
There are more than 6 million children hospitalized each year. Being in the hospital can be really scary, especially for kids, and can actually lead to depression. Games and other activities can be a great distraction for kids in hospitals. In collaboration with DoSomething.org we will create activity books to brighten their stay!

Money Jars for Charity
Monday, December 15th 7-8pm
We will create a loose change jar using tissue paper, paint, markers, buttons,
embellishments, ribbons, and stickers. We will wrap them in cellophane, tie with a ribbon and donate them to children at Ronald McDonald House. A
community service certificate will be given to all participants!

Dog Toys for Charity
Monday, December 22nd 3:30pm-4:30pm
Dogs that don't get toys to chew on can be less playful, which makes them less likely to be adopted. Everyone loves a playful pooch! We will make DIY doggie toys for shelters and encourage potential adopters to give those pups a new home. Please bring an old t-shirt with you!

Smiles for Soldiers

Nearly 20% of service members in Iraq and Afghanistan experience acute stress, depression, and/or anxiety. Getting thank-you notes has a positive impact on soldiers' moods. In collaboration with DoSomething.org we will make and send thank you cards to deployed soldiers to let them know we appreciate their service. All materials provided and community service awarded.

Pillows for Charity

Wednesday, November 12th 7-8pm
Make a fuzzy, fleece pillow from scratch! No sewing involved! Pillows will be donated to Ronald McDonald house in New Hyde Park. Community service certificate will be given to all participants! 

Dog Treats for Charity

Tuesday, December 2nd 7-8pm
Unfortunately we can't bring home every dog that lives in the shelter, but we can brighten their day with tasty treats!  Join Mrs. Kathy to make homemade dog treats from scratch using cookie cutters to make pet-friendly shapes. We will donate them to a local animal shelter. Community service certificate will be given to all participants!

A vision board is a collage of pictures of the goals and dreams you want to attract into your life. We will decorate journals with old magazines and pictures of what we would like to achieve for ourselves this year! All materials supplied.
TEEN MOVIE: TEEN WITCH

Louise is not very popular at her high school. Then she learns that she's descended from the witches of Salem and has inherited their powers. At first she uses them to get back at the girls and teachers who teased her and to win the heart of the handsome football captain. In collaboration with DoSomething.org we will make and mail birthday cards to help ensure everyone gets to celebrate on their special day! All materials provided and community service awarded.

FAULT IN OUR STARS MOVIE
Tuesday, September 30th 6pmWe’ll supply the tissues for this tearjerker. Hazel and Gus are two teens who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. Rated PG-13. 126 minutes

Visit us at our home page www.northbellmorelibrary.org for access to many kinds of databases withvaluable information and support for your schoolwork, available in the library and from home. Students who have not yet read the required summer reading book, can still come in to find the books in the YA section. If the book is not on the shelf, a Librarian can request that a copy be brought into the library.

SAT Review Class

Sign-up for the S.A.T. Prep Class begins Tuesday, September 2nd at the Reference Desk. This is a six-week math and verbal course to help high school students prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Classes will be held Thursdays: October 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th and November 6th from 6:45-8:45 p.m. An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is required at registration. Students must also purchase McGraw-Hill’s SAT I Book, 2015 Edition for class.
We have limited copies for sale at the Reference Desk for $5.

It is our 6th annual Beach Bag Book Club and we’re pulling out all the stops! Everyone that signs up gets a beach bag to tote all of your favorite books around in this summer, and the first 10 people to sign up will receive a free book from one of our guest authors on the day of the BBBC event! We are starting our club off with an amazing panel of YA authors - Susane Colasanti, Elizabeth Eulberg, Jen. E. Smith and Kieran Scott!

We are going to cook up some homemade BBQ sauce, bottle it up and design a label to take with the sauce. Makes a great Father's Day gift!

Vegetable Quesadillas

Tuesday, June 17th 7pm
Celebrate Eat Your Vegetable Day here at the Library with delicious vegetable quesadillas. After a demonstration we will prepare our fresh ingredients and cook our quesadillas in the Library. We will also make guacamole from scratch! Bring your appetite!



Teen Summer Reading Club 2014
“SPARK A REACTION”
SRP Kick-Off Party on Tuesday, July 1st 4:30pm
Join us to kick-off the summer right and Spark a Reaction at our SRP pizza party on July 1st at 4:30pm!  Sign up for the teen summer reading club while eating pizza, playing Bingo and other fun games, making crafts, and entering raffles to win more prizes!  All students entering 6th through 12th grade in September can join NBL’s summer reading club from July 1st to August 19th.  As a member you will read books, write reviews of the books you have read, and submit them for a chance to win the weekly raffle. When you sign up for the summer reading club you will get a chance to guess how many candies are in the jar at the library. The closest guess wins the whole jar!

MANICURE WORKSHOP

Come and spend some quality time with Mom, Grandma, or your friends and learn how to manicure, decorate and care for your nails. Nail kitprovided to each participant. $5 materials fee.

OFRA JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Thursday, May 8th 7-8:30pm
In this fun workshop with Miss Ofra you will learn how to design, adjust and attach four strands of beads to a clasp using a crimp tube. This piece of jewelry will look like it was purchased in a store! Please register at the Reference desk with a materials fee of $10.

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP
Monday, May 19th 6:45-8:45pm
Teenagers are invited to learn the basics of caring for infants and small children along with first aid techniques. Registered nurses Joanne Tanck and Georgette Basso will present a two-hour basic first aid course and an introduction to babysitting skills. Participants are asked to bring a doll or stuffed animal for demonstration. Certificates will be awarded.

DOG TREATS FOR CHARITY

TEEN ART SHOW
Are you a teen artist that likes to express  yourself creatively? Do you draw, paint, or have an interest in photography? Submit an original piece of your artwork to be displayed   at NBL’s teen art exhibit in June! The following types of work will be accepted: original sketches, paintings, and photography. Pick up an artist registration form at the Adult Reference Desk, and submit it along with your artwork. Open to grades 6 – 12. Join Mrs. Kathy to make delicious mini donuts from scratch. We will follow a recipe, measure and mix ingredients, decorate the donuts and take everything home in a bakery box.

Rodeo Round-up

Yee Haw! Put on your boots and saddle up and mosey on over to volunteer at our YA sponsored rodeo for children ages 4 and up. We’ll read stories, play games, do crafts, and more!

Camp-IN with Jen Calonita

Come celebrate the release of Jen Calonita’s latest book, Summer State of Mind, the fresh and funny summer-camp companion novel to Sleepaway Girls! Come ready for a Camp-IN. (PJ’s, sleeping bags, etc.) In addition to some campy crafts, we will be making delicious s’mores pizza! Jen will be there to sign copies of her book, answer questions and just have fun! Waffles & Ice Cream

Join us to celebrate International Waffle Day! March 25th is dedicated to waffles, the delicious food that has been enjoyed for centuries. We will work in groups to measure, mix and make waffles on commercial waffle makers. We will then prepare a sundae on top of the waffle, which will include ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate syrup and bananas. This is a delicious treat! Please sign-up in advance.

It’s finally on DVD! Join us for a viewing of Catching Fire. The film begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts . Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games a competition that could change Panem forever. Celebrate Teen Tech Week March 9-15, 2014 by creating a library or book themed meme to enter in our contest! The meme that makes our board of judges LOL the most will win a $25 iTunes gift card. Join us in baking for a good cause.  We will learn to make homemade chocolate chip cookies from scratch, and Mrs. Kathy will bake half of them and bring them to the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen in Hempstead.  We will bring the other half home to enjoy with family and friends.

Teen Zumba

Join the party!  Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music and dance that creates a dynamic, exciting, effective, cardio workout.  These fun, easy routines feature interval aerobic training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body as you dance.
