Teen Summer Reading Club 2016

SRC Kick-Off Party on Tuesday, July 5^th 4:30pm

Join us to kick-off the summer right at our SRC pizza party on July 5^th at 4:30pm!  Sign up for the teen summer reading club while eating pizza, playing bingo and other fun games, making crafts, and entering raffles to win more prizes!  All students entering 6^th through 12^th grade in September can join NBL’s summer reading club from July 5^th to August 12^th.As a member you will read books, write reviews of the books you have read, and submit them for a chance to win the weekly gift card raffle. Everyone that signs up gets a prize!

Snacks will be served This program is part of LIT, an after-hours space just for teens hosted on a rotating basis by the Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick & North Merrick libraries on the first Friday of each month. SUMMER READING CLUB FINALE PARTY

Join us to celebrate the finale of the Summer Reading Club! If you submitted at least one book review this summer you will get an exclusive invitation to the SRC Finale Party! End your summer with a bang!

Sign-up for the SAT Prep Class begins September 1^st at the Reference Desk. This is a six-week math and verbal course to help students prepare for the new SAT. Classes will be held Thursdays, September 15, 29, October 6, 13, 20 and November 3 from 6:45-8:45 p.m. An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski is due at registration.

Don’t forget....We have multiple copies of the books on your summer reading list. Pick one up before they’re all gone!

Libraries Ignite Teens

We invite current 6^th-12^th graders

to kick-off the weekend right, with an after-hours space just for teens. This month we’re heading to North Merrick Library for a LIT-Fest! Hang out with Aimee Friedman, author of Two Summers and our host, YA author extraordinaire, jen Calonita, on Friday, June 3^rd for games, crafts, activities, and snacks. Babysitting Workshop

Monday, June 20^th 6:30-8:30pm

Do you plan on babysitting this summer? Join registered nurses Joanne Tanck and Georgette Basso for a two-hour basic first aid course and an introduction to babysitting skills. Participants are asked to bring a doll or stuffed animal for demonstration. Certificates will be awarded to all participants.

Tie-Dye Apron for Dad

SPRING DONUTS

Join Mrs. Kathy and learn how to make delicious mini donuts from scratch. We will follow a recipe and measure and mix the ingredients. We are using cutting edge technology to create our Spring treats. We will add glaze and decorate. You will bring your donuts home for yourself or to share! Open to grades 5+.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Dog Toys for Charity
Monday, May 23^rd 3:30pm-4:30pm
Dogs that don't get toys to chew on can be less playful, which makes them less likely to be adopted. Everyone loves a playful pooch! We will make DIY doggie toys for shelters and encourage potential adopters to give those pups a new home. Please bring an old t-shirt with you! Grades 5+.

Money Jars for Charity
Monday, May 23^rd 7-8pm
Join Mrs. Kathy to create a loose change jar using tissue paper, paint, markers, buttons, ribbons, and more!. We will wrap them up and donate them to children at Ronald McDonald House. A community service certificate will be given to all participants! Grades 5+

Pizza Margherita

Join Mrs. Kathy to learn how to make pizza from scratch! We will measure, mix and knead all the ingredients to make our own pizza dough. Then we will shape the dough in a tin, add the sauce and the cheese. The pizza will be baked at home. Yum! Open to grades 5+ Please register in advance. 

SPRING CLEANING

It’s that time of year again, and the Young Adult books need to be cleaned.

If you need volunteer hours or you just want to pitch in, come help us out for 1 or 2 hours. Community service will be awarded to all participants. So grab a friend and come ready to clean! Open to grades 5+ Please register in advance.

INTO THE WOODS

Wednesday, April 27th 12:30-3pm

Do you need community service hours? Join us for a fun afternoon of activities inspired by some of our favorite storybook characters. The YA Department will be hosting children of all ages as they travel through the storybook woods in search of adventure, and we need teen volunteers to help! You can even dress in costume if you like! Please register in advance.

CHESS TOURNAMENT 

Sunday, March 6^th 1:30-5pm

Join Chess Master Joel Salman as he conducts this lively tournament for chess enthusiasts in grades 2 through 12. Chess sets, boards and clocks will be provided for all players. Check-in between 1:30-1:45pm, round one begins at 1:50pm. Please arrive promptly. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. All participants must register in advance online or at the Reference Desk.

SAT Prep Course

Learn tricks and techniques for taking the NEW SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. This 6 week course will be held from 6:45-8:45pm on the following Thursday evenings: March 10^th, 17^th, 31^st and April 7^th, 14^th & 21st. An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is required at registration. Students must purchase McGraw-Hill’s SAT I Book, 2016 for class. We have limited copies for sale at the Reference Desk for $5. Register in advance at the Reference Desk.

Introduction to 3-D Printing

Saturday, March 19^th 1:30-4:30pm

Attention inventors and makers! Learn all about amazing 3-D printing technology at our first ever Children’s/Young Adult Maker-Faire for grades 2 and up. 3-D printers can manufacture nearly anything from a virtual computer model by “printing” material, layer by layer, resulting in a concrete, physical object. Have fun designing models for a project, create game pieces for board games and much more! Registration begins March 3^rd.

Distressed denim workshop

Monday, March 28^th 7pm

Join fashion designer, Kathryn Hunt to create a one-of-a-kind denim masterpiece! Bring in a pair of jeans or denim jacket and learn basic techniques to add distressed details to make your denim marvelous! Tools are provided as well as denim sample fabrics for practice. .

We will make Irish Soda Bread loaves to donate to those in need. We will also make scones to bring home to bake. All participants will receive a community service certificate. Open to grades 5 and up. This class may contain food allergens.

Craft Buddies

March is National Craft Month. What better way to celebrate than to volunteer to help young children create fun spring craft projects! Community service will be awarded to all participants. Open to grades 5 and up.
