CHESS CLUB

Our chess club will meet on Tuesdays, May 13th & 27th and June 10th & 24th. New players welcome! Sign up any night the club meets. All skill levels welcome.

MANICURE WORKSHOP
Tuesday, May 6th 7-8:30pm
Come and spend some quality time with Mom, Grandma, or your friends and learn how to manicure, decorate and care for your nails. Nail kitprovided to each participant. $5 materials fee.

OFRA JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Thursday, May 8th 7-8:30pm
In this fun workshop with Miss Ofra you will learn how to design, adjust and attach four strands of beads to a clasp using a crimp tube. This piece of jewelry will look like it was purchased in a store! Please register at the Reference desk with a materials fee of $10.

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP
Monday, May 19th 6:45-8:45pm
Teenagers are invited to learn the basics of caring for infants and small children along with first aid techniques. Registered nurses Joanne Tanck and Georgette Basso will present a two-hour basic first aid course and an introduction to babysitting skills. Participants are asked to bring a doll or stuffed animal for demonstration. Certificates will be awarded.

DOG TREATS FOR CHARITY
Wednesday, May 21st 7pm
Unfortunately we can’t bring home every dog that lives in the shelter, but we can brighten their day with tasty treats! Join Mrs. Kathy to make dog biscuits to donate to a local shelter. Community service will be awarded.

TEEN ART SHOW
Are you a teen artist that likes to express  yourself creatively? Do you draw, paint, or have an interest in photography? Submit an original piece of your artwork to be displayed   at NBL’s teen art exhibit in June! The following types of work will be accepted: original sketches, paintings, and photography. Pick up an artist registration form at the Adult Reference Desk, and submit it along with your artwork. Open to grades 6 – 12. BEACH BAG BOOK CLUB—AUTHOR PANEL!
We have once again teamed up with the Merrick and North Merrick Library to bring back the Beach Bag Book Club. At each event, hosted by YA author Jen Calonita, teens will get to discuss a book pre-selected for them with not only Ms. Calonita, but with the author of the book itself! We are starting our club off with an amazing panel of YA authors - Susane Colasanti, Elizabeth Eulberg, Jen. E. Smith and Kieran Scott! We will meet on Tuesday, June 3rd at 6:30pm at the Merrick Library to discuss our authors’ newest titles. Don’t miss this!! Open to grades 6 and up.

Join us for a good doggie cause. We are making soft and cozy dog beds to donate to a local animal shelter. No sewing skills needed!

Operation Spring Cleaning

Tuesday, April 15th 2-5pm
It’s that time of year again, and the YA books need to be cleaned. If you need to get some volunteer hours in or you just want to pitch in, come help us out for 1, 2 or all 3 hours. Feel free to register with a friend to work alongside of you. Registration is required.

 Mini Donuts

Tuesday, April 15th 7-8pm
Join Mrs. Kathy to make delicious mini donuts from scratch. We will follow a recipe, measure and mix ingredients, decorate the donuts and take everything home in a bakery box.

Rodeo Round-up

Wednesday, April 16th 11am
Yee Haw! Put on your boots and saddle up and mosey on over to volunteer at our YA sponsored rodeo for children ages 4 and up. We’ll read stories, play games, do crafts, and more!

Teen Movie: Ender’s Game

Wednesday, April 16th 6pm
Join us for a viewing of Ender’s Game, a sci-fi movie about a young man who’s chosen to lead an epic battle against invading aliens. The movie is based on the YA book by Orson Scott Card. Rated PG-13

Memory Wire Bracelet

Tuesday, April 22nd 7-8pm
Make your own memory wire bracelet to keep or to give to someone else. All materials will be provided. Open to grades 5 and up.

Camp-IN with Jen Calonita

Friday, April 25th 6:30-8pm
Come celebrate the release of Jen Calonita’s latest book, Summer State of Mind, the fresh and funny summer-camp companion novel to Sleepaway Girls! Come ready for a Camp-IN. (PJ’s, sleeping bags, etc.) In addition to some campy crafts, we will be making delicious s’mores pizza! Jen will be there to sign copies of her book, answer questions and just have fun! This event will take place at the North Merrick Library.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP with MATT BLACKSTONE

Do you like to write? Would you enjoy honing your skills in this area? Local author, Matt Blackstone, will teach you the techniques to write like a pro! He will also discuss his new book, SORRY YOU’RE LOST. There will be a reading, a raffle and book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Don’t miss this opportunity! Tuesdays, March 4th & 18th and April 1st, 8th, 15th & 29th. Learn the basics while our more seasoned players learn new chess strategies and challenge new opponents. We have chess players of all skill levels. New players welcome! No registration required.

SAT Prep Course
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. This 6 week course will be held from 6:45-8:45pm on the following Thursday evenings: March 6th, 13th, 20th and April 3rd, 17th and May 1st. An $80 check, payable to Melissa Bielawski, is required at registration. Students must purchase McGraw-Hill’s SAT I Book, 2014 Edition for class.  We have limited copies for sale at the Reference Desk for $5.  Please sign up in advance.

Waffles & Ice Cream
Tuesday, March 25th 7pm
Join us to celebrate International Waffle Day! March 25th is dedicated to waffles, the delicious food that has been enjoyed for centuries. We will work in groups to measure, mix and make waffles on commercial waffle makers. We will then prepare a sundae on top of the waffle, which will include ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate syrup and bananas. This is a delicious treat! Please sign-up in advance.

Teen Movie: CATCHING FIRE

It’s finally on DVD! Join us for a viewing of Catching Fire. The film begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts . Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games a competition that could change Panem forever. Rated PG-13

Teen Tech Week

Love Grumpy Cat and other hilarious memes? Celebrate Teen Tech Week March 9-15, 2014 by creating a library or book themed meme to enter in our contest! The meme that makes our board of judges LOL the most will win a $25 iTunes gift card. Entries should be emailed to jtymecki@northbellmorelibrary.org by March 17th. The caption must relate to the library, reading, books, etc. to be considered for entry. Contestants may enter up to two memes. Please send with the subject line "Meme Contest" and include the following information: Name, Email, Phone, and meme attached as an image file. BOOK BUDDIES
Tuesdays, February 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th from 3:30-4:15pm
Teens and children become “buddies” by sharing books and a positive library experience. Children get a chance to practice their reading skills and/or be read to while teens gain volunteer experience, and a chance to make a difference in a child’s life.  Please sign up in advance online or at the Adult Reference desk.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” We hope you choose to volunteer to help at our birthday bash for the one and only- Dr. Seuss! We’ll host children ages 3 and up and read stories, play games, do crafts,  and more!
