March Programs

Book Buddies
Teens and children become "buddies" by sharing books and a positive library experience. Children get a chance to practice their reading skills and/or be read to while teens gain volunteer experience, community service credit and a chance to make a difference in a child's life. Sign up to be a Book Buddy at the Adult Reference Desk. Little Buddies ages 4-8 can sign-up at the Children's Desk. Book Buddies will meet on: Mondays, March 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th and April 4th & 11th from 3:30-4:00pm.

Saturday Stories
Saturday, March 5th 10:15-11:15am
Volunteer to read our newest picture books to children ages 3-6. We will also watch a DVD based on a children's story. Earn community service credit and have fun!

Make a Blanket
Monday, March 21st, 7-8pm

Tie together warm fleecy material to make blankets for a local shelter to take the chill off the cold weather! The blankets will be given to a baby, child or teen in need. All participants will receive an hour of community service and a certificate. Please sign up in advance at the Adult Reference Desk.

SAT Prep Course
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. This 6 weeks course will be held from 6:45-8:45 on the following Thursday evenings: March 3rd, 10th, 17th, 31st and April 14th & 21st. The fee is $80.00 per student. Please make checks payable to Melissa Bielawski. Students must purchase McGraw-Hill's SAT I Book, 2011 Edition (ISBN 978-0071740944).

Chess Club
Children (3rd-6th Grade) 7:-7:55pm
YA & Adults (7th-Adult) 8:-8:55pm
Our chess club will meet on Tuesdays, March 1st & 15th and April 12th & 26th. New players welcome! Sign up any night the club meets.

Lego Club
Tuesday, March 15th, 3:30-4:30pm
Join us to practice your crazy Lego building skills. We will provide the Legos - you create the masterpiece. Don't forget your digital camera to work on our stop motion films! Open to grades 4-9. No registration required.

Manga Club
Wednesday, March 23rd, 3:30-4:30pm
Join us after school to read and discuss manga. We will chat about storylines, characters and artwork. No registration required.

Irish Soda Bread Workshop
Wednesday, March 16th, 7-8:15pm
Join us to celebrate St. Patrick's Day by learning how to make a simple, delicious, traditional Irish Soda Bread. Each participant will make their own and bring it home to bake. Please sign us in advance at the Adult Reference Desk.

"Secrets" Celebration
Friday, March 18th, 4pm at the Merrick Public Library
Come meet Jen Calonita author of the "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" series, and chat about the release of "Secrets of My Hollywood Life: There's No Place Like Home," the final book of the series. Ms. Calonita will be autographing her books, which can be purchased at the library on the day of the event. Please sign up in advance at the Adult Reference Desk.

Attention Fans of "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" series

On Friday, March 18th at 4pm we are celebrating the release of Jen Calonita's final book from her Secrets of My Hollywood Life Series. We need your help to organize the "Secrets Celebration" event which will be dedicated to our friend Jen Calonita and her fantastic books. The preparation for this event is top secret. LICM TEEN PAINTING WORKSHOP
Thursday, February 10, 7-8:30PM
The Long Island Children's Museum will present this workshop to explore the art and life of Willem de Kooning, one of the famous painters of abstract expressionist movement. You will create your own painting using large canvases, paint, tracing vellum and a variety of other materials. Don't miss out - space is limited! Sign up at the Adult Reference Desk.
This program is a make-up for the snow day on December 27th.

TWEEN/TEEN MOVIE

Join us for a viewing of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. The movie is based on author Kathryn Lasky's popular series of books about a group of kidnapped owlets who take flight to save their kingdom from an ancient evil by locating the legendary Guardians of Ga'Hoole.
