CHESS CLUB

KNIT ‘N SIT
Join Mrs. Tymecki to make quilt squares which will be donated to Project Linus, a charity that provides blankets to sick children. Beginner and experienced crocheters and knitters are welcome. Knit, socialize and earn community service hours too! All are welcome. If you have your own needles or hooks, please bring them with you. Knit ‘N Sit will meet Tuesdays, January 13th and 27th and February 10th and 24th from 4:30 – 5:30p.m.

MANGA CLUB
Friday, January 16th 3:30 – 5p.m.
Join us after school to read and discuss manga. We will chat about storylines, characters and artwork, and work together to add more manga to the YA collection! No registration necessary. New members welcome!

JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Tuesday, January 13th 7 – 8pm
Learn how to make wire bead necklaces and bracelets to accessorize your wardrobe. Please register in advance at the Adult Reference Desk. A $2 materials fee will be collected at registration.

SAT Prep Course Registration is Now Open!
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. This 6-week course will be held from 6:45-8:45 on the following Thursday evenings: March 12th, 19th, 26th, April 9th, 16th and 30th
Registration begins January 1st at 9am at the Reference Desk. Sign up early as registration is limited. The fee is $80.00 per student. Checks only. Please make checks payable to Melissa Bielawski. No refunds. Students must purchase the following book for the class: McGraw-Hill’s SAT I, 2009 Edition (ISBN 978-0071592284)

Guitar Hero Tournament
Thursday, February 19th 3 – 5pm
Back by popular demand!!! Come to the Library to show your rock star skills. The tournament is free and open to everyone in grades 5-12. Registration is required, and prizes will be awarded. You may bring your own guitar for PlayStation 2. We will have games for those eliminated. Of course we will provide snacks for all participants.

Babysitting Workshop
Tuesday, February 17th from 6:00 – 8:00pm.
Registered nurses Joanne Tanck and Georgette Basso return to present a two-hour basic first aid course and an introduction to babysitting skills. Learn the basics of caring for infants and small children along with first aid techniques. Bring a Cabbage Patch or similarly-sized doll or stuffed animal. All participants will receive a Certificate. Registration begins January 1st at 9am at the Reference Desk. Sign up early as registration is limited. The class is free and will have space for 30 young adults in grades 6 – 12.

WINGSPAN YOGA FOR TEENS
Wednesdays, February 4th, 11th,18th 5 – 6pm
Come sprout your wings and soar to new heights through yoga! Taught by certified yoga instructor Julie Weiss, the teen yoga classes build strength, flexibility, and self-confidence. Teens will concentrate on yoga postures, breathing techniques and meditation exercises. Please wear comfortable clothing, bring a water bottle, and a yoga mat if you have your own. Extra mats will be available if you need to borrow.
Please register in advance at the Adult Reference Desk.

TWILIGHT PARTY
Thursday, December 11 at 6:30p.m.
Attention all fans of the Twilight Saga! Go to see movie Twilight (in theaters November 21) or read the book, and come to share your opinion about "the world's most popular vampire novelist", Stephenie Meyer. We'll raffle a Twilight Soundtrack CD and Twilight book set! Refreshments will be served. The party will be held at the Merrick Library Wing.

Make your nails look fabulous with help from Miss Kathy, a licensed nail technician. Learn how to manicure, decorate and take care of your nails. Page Turners: A Book and a Movie Thursday, November 6th 6 – 8:30pm Enjoy discussing Penelope with our group, then watch the movie that was inspired by the book. Be sure to pick up a copy of the book when you register. Open to grades 6th - 9th

Manga Swap Friday, November 7th 4-5p.m. We all know recycling helps rid the world of waste, so why not recycle your Manga? Come and bring any Anime/Manga you would like to trade or swap.

How to Beat the High Cost of College Tuesday, November 18th from 7:00 -8:30 p.m. Barry Fox, a college financial aid expert, will explain the college financial aid process. Find out how to get your share of the billions of dollars in grants and loans that are available for student financial aid. Learn to accurately fill out the federal and state financial aid forms. Participants will be shown step-by-step strategies for filling out the government forms, planning a student needs analysis and how to negotiate with college financial aid offices. Also discussed will be divorced and separated parental situations, independent students and the best free web sites for scholarship search. Registration is not required and all are welcome to attend. Learn how to draw you favorite cartoon characters with the talented Derek Mainhart. He will discuss character development and practice a variety of cartooning techniques, including facial expressions and creating complex forms from simple shapes. All materials will be provided for this workshop.

Our July book will be, Secrets of my Hollywood life : Family Affairs, by Jen Calonita, followed by our August book, Spells and Sleeping Bags by Sarah Mlynowski. NBL NEEDS A FEW GOOD TEENS!

Do you need to beef up that college application? Earn community service hours for P.I.G.? Need hours for your Bar/Bat mitzvah? Or are you just a good person that likes to lend a helping hand in your community?
Search no further than your local library. We are currently accepting applications for volunteers in grades 6-12.
  • Join the TEEN ADVISORY GROUP. It meets monthly at the Library. Bring your ideas, opinions and friends to assist Young Adult Services with programming ideas and things important to teens who use the Library.
  • Become a Book Buddy volunteer. Come once a week and read to a young child.
  • Write a book review of a young adult title to be posted on the Teen Scene.
