TEEN SUMMER READING CLUB 2013
“BENEATH THE SURFACE”
July 9th – August 20th  
Join us to kick-off the summer right at our annual summer pizza party on July 9th at 4pm! Sign up for the teen summer reading club while eating pizza, playing fun games, making crafts, and entering raffles to win more prizes!  All students entering 6th through 12th grade in September can join NBL’s summer reading club starting July 9th.  As a member you will read books, write reviews of the books you have read, and submit them for a chance to win the weekly raffle. When you sign up for the summer reading club you will get a chance to guess how many candies are in the jar at the library. The closest guess wins the whole jar!

Wednesdays, July 10th, 17th, 24th , 31st and August 7th and 14th. New players welcome! Register on any night the club meets.

JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Thursday, July 11th  7-8pm
Join us for this hands-on beading class. We will learn how to make a beautiful bracelet using glass beads. $5 material fee

LI MOTION PICTURE ARTS CENTER
Thursdays, July 11th, 18th and 25th 3pm
The LI Motion Picture Arts Center will present three workshops for Grades 3 and up: Sign up for one, two, or all three!

LINE DRAWING ANIMATION
Thursday, July 11th 3-4 pm
A hands-on workshop… create your own artwork, drawing directly on professional 16 mm and 35mm film. Work with animation cells and light boxes, see your finished project on a laptop, take home your work when done!

An interactive workshop…create your own short stop motion animation using a digital camera and movie lights, just like the pros!

BOOK BUDDIES
Mondays, July 15th, 22nd and August 5th, 12th & 19th 3-3:45pm
Become a Book Buddy and read aloud to children ages 4-8. The program encourages beginning readers to continue reading during the summer and is a great opportunity for older readers to share their love of books.

OREO DIRT CAKE
Monday, July 15th 7-8pm
In this hands-on class you will make a scrumptious dirt cake. This is a delicious treat!

LET’S MAKE PIZZA
Tuesday, July 16th 7-8pm
Join Mrs. Kathy to make delicious pizza from scratch. We will make the dough, add the cheese and sauce, and bake it at home. Yum!

BEACH BAG BOOK CLUB
Wednesdays, July  24th & August 14th  6:30pm 
This summer our favorite teen author, Jen  Calonita (Secrets of My Hollywood Life series), invites you and your friends to join our super fun Beach Bag Book Club. At each event, we will get to discuss the books with not only Ms. Calonita, but with the author of the book itself.  Our July book is Shadow Lands by Kate Brian and in August we’ll read Send Me a Sign by Tiffany Schmidt. Our club will meet at the Merrick Library at 2279 Merrick Avenue.

BABYSITTING WORKSHOP
Thursday, July 25th 6:45-8:45pm
Attend our popular workshop with Registered Nurses, Joann Tanck and Georgette Basso, and become a professional babysitter. Certificates will be awarded to all participants. Please bring a doll to the class.

ICE CREAM SWEET SHOPPE

Beat the heat and join us to make, decorate and enjoy your own delicious sundae!

VIDEO GAME DESIGN
Thursdays, August 1st & 8th 7-9pm
In this two session hands-on class, you will get an introduction to the basics of video game creation.  Learn how to design a video game and write a program.  You will construct rooms and doorways, add a player, objects, textures, colors, lighting and more.  We will compile the finished program and learn how to make changes and correct errors. Grade 5+

MANGA WORKSHOP
Saturdays, August 3rd, 10th & 17th 1-3pm
Join Anime artists Kelly Gordon and Jen Scrimenti for this hands-on three week extreme drawing workshop. They will look at your drawings, give feedback, help you polish your ideas of storyline, and give tips and tools you will need to get to that next level. All materials provided. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from the pros! 

SUMMER READING CLUB FIINALE PARTY
Tuesday, August 20th 4pm
Join us to celebrate the finale of the Summer Reading Club on Tuesday, August 20th! If you submitted at least 1 book review this summer you will get an exclusive invitation to the SRC Finale Party! We will have games, pizza, raffles and prizes! End your summer with a bang!

Beach Bag Book Club
We have once again teamed up with the Merrick, North Merrick and Bellmore Library to bring back the Beach Bag Book Club. At each event, hosted by young adult author Jen Calonita (Secrets of My Hollywood Life and Belles series), teens will get to discuss a book pre-selected for them with not only Ms. Calonita, but with the author of the book itself! 7pm. Everyone that signs up gets a beach bag to tote all of your favorite books around in this summer. Sign up in advance online or at the Adult Reference Desk. Open to grades 6 and up. June, July & August meetings will take place at the Merrick Library. Mark your calendars for the 2013 BBB Club dates:

Chess Club

Pedicure Party
Monday, June 24th 7-8:30pm
It’s summertime, and that means one thing...flip-flops! Get ready to show off your toes! Mrs. Kathy will teach us how to pedicure and decorate our toenails. Everyone will receive their own pedicure kit. There is a $7.00 materials fee.

Wizard of Oz Party
Wednesday, June 26th 3pm
Lions, and tigers and bears-oh my! Join us to celebrate the DVD release of Oz The Great and Powerful. We will have delicious snacks, Oz inspired crafts, raffles and of course we will settle in for a viewing of the new movie! Open to grades 3 and up. Please register in advance online or at the Adult Reference Desk.

Fruit Smoothie Social
Friday, June 28th 2:30pm
Mrs. Kathy will teach us to create a variety of smoothies using many different fresh fruits (oranges, kiwis, strawberries, berries, bananas and seasonal fruits). Orange juice will be made fresh by the attendees with a citrus press juicer and then used in smoothies. As always this is a hands on class! Everyone will leave with a smoothie recipe and a full belly. Please register in advance online or at the Adult Reference Desk.
